Checklist for children

Sometimes hearing loss is not total but it is partial and hence it can easily go unnoticed, however it is reflected in academic failure, speech problems, lack of concentration, hyperactivity etc. It is important to observe your child for any signs of potential hearing loss.

Turn up the volume of the TV excessively high?Yes /No
Frequently responds inappropriately to a question?Yes /No
Responds intermittently to name calling?Yes /No
Mispronounces certain words?Yes /No
Lately showing academic failures?Yes /No
Complain of ear pain?Yes /No
Requires frequent repetitions during conversation?Yes /No
Turn one ear towards the speaker often?Yes /No
Often watch the face of the speaker during conversation?Yes /No
Show reluctance to mix with other children of similar age?Yes /No
While these signs don’t necessarily mean that your child has a hearing problem, they could be indicators of one. If your answer is “yes” to any of the above questions, or if you suspect your child may have difficulty hearing, contact an audiologist.
